Week 7 — GenAI Learning Activity

The Stories
That Eat Us

Egregores, Identity, and the Spectrum of Free Will

The Pearl in the Crap — awareness found within discomfort

“The pearl is hidden inside the crap. You have to go through the crap to get to it.”

— Phil Stutz, Stutz (Netflix, 2022)

An egregore (Greek: egregoroi, “the wakeful ones”) is a collective thought-form — a self-reinforcing psychic entity sustained by shared attention, emotion, and identity. Documented from the Book of Enoch (3rd c. BCE) through Éliphas Lévi's Le Grand Arcane (1868), Jungian psychology, and modern cognitive science.

This lesson uses real historical footage, contrasting media narratives, and a Generative AI platform to make the invisible mechanism visible. The pearl — awareness, agency, intentional choice — is found only by going through the discomfort.

Where were you during the school clip? Where are you now? Free will is not binary — it is a practice.

50-Minute Lesson Flow

Step-by-step cognitive laboratory

0:00–0:10
Introduction

The Choice & The Warning

Trigger warning, consent gate, contrasting headlines side-by-side. Students write: 'Name one story you believed without checking.'

0:10–0:20
Phase 1

Shock & Reaction

30-second verified airstrike clip (no headline, no music). Smedley Butler audio. The Matrix red pill scene. Students log one-word bodily reactions.

0:20–0:30
Phase 2

Cognitive Mapping

Draw the cognitive loop on the board. Introduce the free-will spectrum: Compulsive → Aware → Intentional. Students mark where they were during the clip.

0:30–0:40
Phase 3

GenAI Interaction

Students open Microsoft Copilot. Paste a charged headline. AI strips identity-framing. Compare neutral output to gut reaction. Think-pair-share.

Conclusion

Reclaiming Agency

Group debrief. Exit ticket: 'One egregore I feed is ___. Tomorrow I will ___ instead.' Collect handouts.

GenAI as Neutral Mirror

The Generative AI platform (Microsoft Copilot) serves a specific function: it acts as an emotionless cognitive analyst. When a student's identity is activated by a charged headline, they cannot analyze it objectively. The AI strips the identity-framing instantly.

The gap between the student's emotional reaction and the AI's mechanical output is where the egregore mechanism becomes visible.

Student Prompt for Copilot

“You are a neutral cognitive analyst. I will paste a news headline. Identify the implicit identity appeal, the emotional trigger, and the egregore that would benefit from my agreement. Then rewrite the headline as a factual statement without any identity framing.”
